Water expands roughly 9% in volume when it freezes. In a length of pipe with water on both sides of a forming ice blockage, that expansion has nowhere to go, and pressure builds between the ice plug and a closed valve or faucet until the pipe wall gives way — usually not exactly at the ice, but at the weakest nearby point (a joint, a fitting, or a section already under stress). That’s why a burst often shows up somewhat downstream of where the actual freeze occurred.
🏠 Austin homes weren’t built for this
Because sustained hard freezes are historically rare in Central Texas, most Austin-area homes route supply lines through unconditioned attics, use standard (non-frost-free) exterior hose bibs, and don’t bury exterior lines as deep as homes in colder climates. None of that is a defect — it’s a reasonable build choice for the local climate, until an outlier event like Uri or the 2023 ice storm arrives.
🧲 PB vs. PEX vs. copper
Homes built roughly 1978–1995 in the Austin area sometimes used polybutylene (PB) piping, which can become brittle with age; freeze-thaw stress is more likely to reveal an existing weak point in an older PB system. Newer construction generally uses PEX, which flexes more than rigid copper and tends to tolerate a single freeze-thaw cycle better — but PEX is not immune once ice fully blocks a line. Rigid copper is the least forgiving of the three under sustained freeze pressure.

Step-by-step freeze-prep checklist
Do this before the first hard-freeze warning of the season — most of it costs under $60 total and a Saturday afternoon.
Locate & label your main shutoff
Find it today, not during an emergency. Usually near the street-side meter or where the line enters the house. Make sure everyone in the household knows it.
Insulate attic & exposed pipes
Foam pipe sleeves over any accessible supply line in an attic, garage, or exterior wall cavity. The single highest-leverage step for Austin homes.
Disconnect & drain hoses
Every garden hose, off the bib, drained, and stored before the first hard freeze. A connected hose is one of the most common freeze-burst points.

What to do if a pipe bursts
Speed matters more than anything else in the first ten minutes. Here’s the order of operations.
1. Shut off the main — immediately
Before you grab a towel, before you call anyone: shut off the water at the main. This is the single biggest factor in how much damage a burst pipe ends up doing.
2. Cut power to any affected area
If water is anywhere near outlets, switches, or fixtures, shut off electricity to that area at the breaker before you do anything else in the space.
3. Move what you can, fast
Furniture legs, rugs, boxes, electronics — get anything movable up off a wet floor. Every extra minute of standing water adds to what has to dry out or get replaced.

5. Start ventilating and drying
