Gas line work in Austin is regulated by the Texas Railroad Commission (TRRC) and serviced by Texas Gas Service. Every gas line repair or installation requires a TRRC-authorized contractor, a permit, and a pressure-test inspection. Austin Plumbing Pros is TRRC-licensed and Texas Gas Service-approved for residential gas line repair, range and dryer hookups, generator gas tie-ins, pool heater lines, and post-leak repressurization.

One thing newcomers to Austin gas work miss: the service area splits. Most of Austin proper is Texas Gas Service. North/northeast suburbs — parts of Round Rock, Pflugerville, Hutto, Georgetown — are on Atmos Energy. Different account, different shutoff process, different emergency numbers. We pull TRRC paperwork the same way for both, but if you smell gas, you need to know which utility serves your address. The meter itself usually tells you.
What Counts As A Gas Emergency In Austin
Smell gas? Step one: leave the house and call Texas Gas Service at 800-959-5325. They will shut off the gas at the meter and confirm the leak source. Step two: once the area is cleared, call us at (512) 555-PLBR. We diagnose and repair the line, pull the TRRC paperwork, and Texas Gas Service repressurizes the system. We do not work on a live gas leak — that’s TGS’s job and ours starts once the system is depressurized.
Common Gas Line Repairs We Run
Corroded black iron at the meter or appliance. Black iron rusts at the threaded joints over decades. Repair is to cut out the corroded section and re-thread with new pipe. $345-$595 typical. CSST (corrugated stainless steel tubing) bonding. CSST installed before 2009 was not required to be bonded to the electrical system. Lightning strikes (we get plenty in Austin spring storms) can arc through CSST and ignite gas. Bonding adds a #6 copper jumper from the CSST manifold to the main electrical ground. $185 — required by Austin code on resale. Generator tie-in. Generac or Briggs whole-home generator needs a 1-inch black iron drop from the meter, plus an automatic transfer switch (electrician). Our half: $785-$1,250 depending on run distance. Pool heater line. 3/4-inch black iron from the meter to the pool heater pad. $945-$1,650 typical for a 60-foot run.
Permits And Inspection — Why It Matters Even For Small Jobs
Every gas line modification requires a permit with Austin Development Services and a pressure-test inspection at 10 PSI for 15 minutes (residential). The inspection signature triggers Texas Gas Service to repressurize. Skipping the permit means the line is technically unauthorized and TGS will refuse to turn the meter back on if they discover it during their own visit. Resale inspections catch unpermitted gas work and torpedo deals. Every job we do is permitted, period.
Range, Dryer, And Cooktop Hookups
Range hookup with new flex connector and shutoff valve: $185-$245. Dryer hookup with new flex: $185-$235. Cooktop conversion (electric to gas): $445-$685 if there’s a gas line within 10 feet, otherwise $945-$1,650 to run new line. All include leak test with a manometer and paperwork.
Post-Freeze Gas System Restart
After a hard freeze the regulators on the meter can ice up and the system loses pressure. Texas Gas Service handles the regulator; we handle the appliance-side restart — relighting pilots, testing each appliance for ignition, leak-testing the lines downstream of the meter. After Uri 2021 we ran 200+ post-freeze gas restart calls. Flat fee: $189.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are you licensed to work on gas in Austin?
Yes — TRRC license LP-2089 and TSBPE M-43891. Texas Gas Service has us on their authorized contractor list.
Do you handle the actual leak shutoff?
No — that’s Texas Gas Service. Call 800-959-5325 first. We come in after the leak is contained to do the line repair.
How much is a generator gas line?
$785-$1,250 for our half (drop from meter, valve, manometer-tested). Electrician handles the transfer switch; we coordinate.
Do I need a permit to swap my range?
Only if the gas line itself is modified. A simple appliance swap on an existing valve and flex doesn’t require a permit. Adding a new gas point does.
What’s CSST bonding and why does it matter?
CSST is the yellow corrugated gas tubing in attics and crawlspaces. Pre-2009 installs aren’t bonded to ground. Lightning can arc through unbonded CSST and ignite gas. $185 fix; required on resale.
How long does a gas line install take?
Range hookup: 45 min. Generator tie-in: 4-6 hours. Pool heater run: half a day.
Will TGS turn the gas back on the same day?
Usually next business day after our inspection sign-off. We coordinate the inspection-to-restart with TGS so the gap is minimal.

About Austin Plumbing Pros
Austin Plumbing Pros is the city’s premium master-licensed plumbing operation, run out of three depots — South Slaughter Lane, Anderson Mill, and East Riverside — so a TSBPE-licensed plumber is on-site for most calls within 35-60 minutes of dispatch anywhere inside the 130 loop. Every emergency truck carries a Master or Journeyman as the lead tech (never apprentice-only), the standard inventory truck stocks Rheem, A.O. Smith, and Bradford White water heaters plus Moen, Delta, and Kohler cartridges and aerators, and we pull permits with the City of Austin, Travis County, Williamson County, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, and Manor jurisdictions every business day. We’ve spent enough hours pulling cast iron out of pre-1980 Hyde Park backyards and chasing slab leaks under 1990s North Austin builds that we know which symptom is the easy fix and which is buying time. When you call, a real Austin dispatcher picks up. When the truck arrives, the Master plumber writes you a flat-rate estimate before any drywall or pipe is touched. When the job’s done, you get a two-year parts-and-labor warranty. That’s the entire operation in three sentences.
