Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Austin — Trenchless Lining for Hyde Park, Travis Heights, and Every Pre-1980 Lateral

Central Austin’s iconic neighborhoods — Hyde Park, Travis Heights, Allandale, Tarrytown, Bouldin Creek — were built when sewer laterals were clay tile or Orangeburg pipe. Sixty to ninety years later, those lines are at the end of life. Roots are inside. Joints are offset. Bellies have formed. Austin Plumbing Pros offers three repair paths — trenchless cured-in-place lining, pipe bursting, and traditional excavation — and we pull every Austin Water permit and TCEQ paperwork required.

AUSTIN-SPECIFIC NOTE

Houston Black clay is the named subsoil under most of central Austin and it does something specific to sewer lines: a 4-6 inch shrink-swell cycle every year as the clay loses and regains moisture. Cast-iron joints sealed with oakum or lead in the 1950s-60s were never engineered for that kind of motion over 60-70 years. The joints fail, then roots find the gap. By the time you have a backup it’s usually a multi-decade story finally catching up. Pre-1970 78704, 78705, 78751, and 78703 are where we run most of our sewer replacement work.

Three Sewer Line Failure Patterns Specific To Austin

Root intrusion in clay tile. Hyde Park bungalows and Travis Heights craftsmans built between 1925 and 1965 typically have 4-inch clay tile from the house to the city tap, 50-90 feet down the yard. Joints are sealed with oakum and mortar, both of which leak water once they age. Live-oak feeder roots find that water and grow into the line. By year 50 the line is half-blocked. Orangeburg collapse. 1947-1972 builds (a lot of Allandale and Brentwood) used Orangeburg — wood-fiber pipe with bituminous binder. It softens and deforms under load. Most Austin Orangeburg lines are flat-pancaked by now. Cast-iron rot. 1960s-1980s slab homes (Crestview, Northwest Hills) ran cast iron under the slab and out to the yard. Cast iron pits and scales until the pipe wall is paper-thin. Hydrogen-sulfide gas accelerates corrosion at the crown.

Trenchless Pipe Lining — Best Option For 80% Of Austin Repairs

Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liner is a felt sock impregnated with epoxy, inverted into the existing pipe, inflated, and cured with steam or ambient heat. The result is a new pipe inside the old pipe, with a 50-year warranty. No digging in the yard. Same-day install for most laterals. Cost: $115-$185 per foot installed, or $7,500-$12,000 for a typical 60-foot Austin lateral including the camera, the permit, and the cleanout install. Lining works when the host pipe still has structural shape (root-damaged but not collapsed). It does not work on a fully collapsed Orangeburg line — that needs bursting or replacement.

Pipe Bursting — When The Line Is Past Lining

Pipe bursting pulls a bursting head through the old line, shattering it outward into the surrounding soil while pulling a new HDPE pipe behind it. Requires two small pits (one at the cleanout, one at the city tap). Yard impact: minimal. Cost: $145-$210 per foot. Used when the old line is collapsed Orangeburg, severely offset, or undersized (3-inch upsized to 4-inch). Same day or next day on most Austin jobs.

Traditional Excavation — Last Resort But Sometimes Necessary

When the lateral has multiple bellies, has been re-routed in past repairs, runs under a permanent structure (a deck, a driveway), or has a depth issue, the only option is dig-and-replace. Backhoe down the yard line, lay SDR-35 PVC at the correct grade, backfill, and re-sod. Cost: $85-$140 per foot, plus $1,500-$3,500 in landscaping restoration. Two-to-three day job. We schedule with Austin Water permits and 811 utility marking ahead of arrival.

The Austin Water Cleanout Requirement

Austin Water has required a two-way cleanout at the property line for every sewer service since 2010. If you don’t have one (most pre-2010 homes don’t), and we touch your sewer for any reason, the inspector requires us to install it as part of the permit. Cost: $785-$1,200. We disclose this upfront so it’s not a surprise on the final invoice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does sewer line replacement cost in Austin?

Trenchless lining: $7,500-$12,000 for a typical 60-foot lateral. Pipe bursting: $9,000-$14,500. Traditional dig-and-replace: $5,100-$8,400 plus $1,500-$3,500 in landscaping. All include permits.

Can you fix a sewer line without digging up my yard?

Yes — trenchless lining or pipe bursting work for 80% of Austin laterals. We camera the line first and tell you honestly which method applies. Some lines (collapsed, multiple bellies) genuinely require excavation.

Does Austin require a permit for sewer work?

Yes — every sewer repair or replacement that exits the building requires an Austin Water permit and inspection. We pull and close every permit; the paperwork goes to you for your records.

How long does trenchless lining take?

Same-day install for a 60-80 foot lateral. We arrive, camera, prep the line (often a hydro-jet to clean the host), invert the liner, cure for 4-6 hours, then re-camera. You can use water normally that evening.

Will my homeowner’s insurance cover sewer line repair?

Standard Texas HO-3 policies do not cover wear-and-tear failure of sewer lines outside the foundation. Some carriers offer a Service Line Endorsement for $40-$80/year that covers it. Worth checking your declarations page before a repair is needed.

Can I get a free camera inspection?

Free when bundled with a hydro-jet ($389-$589). Standalone camera inspection is $99 and includes the video file.

Are you licensed for sewer work in Austin?

Yes — TSBPE M-43891 and registered with Austin Water for sewer service permits.

About Austin Plumbing Pros

Austin Plumbing Pros is the city’s premium master-licensed plumbing operation, run out of three depots — South Slaughter Lane, Anderson Mill, and East Riverside — so a TSBPE-licensed plumber is on-site for most calls within 35-60 minutes of dispatch anywhere inside the 130 loop. Every emergency truck carries a Master or Journeyman as the lead tech (never apprentice-only), the standard inventory truck stocks Rheem, A.O. Smith, and Bradford White water heaters plus Moen, Delta, and Kohler cartridges and aerators, and we pull permits with the City of Austin, Travis County, Williamson County, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park, Leander, Georgetown, and Manor jurisdictions every business day. We’ve spent enough hours pulling cast iron out of pre-1980 Hyde Park backyards and chasing slab leaks under 1990s North Austin builds that we know which symptom is the easy fix and which is buying time. When you call, a real Austin dispatcher picks up. When the truck arrives, the Master plumber writes you a flat-rate estimate before any drywall or pipe is touched. When the job’s done, you get a two-year parts-and-labor warranty. That’s the entire operation in three sentences.
